From Scandi to space-saving: 2021's biggest decor and design trends
After spending most of the last year in lockdown, it's no wonder that many of us turned to the internet in search of a few new interior design ideas and home makeover tips throughout 2020.
Next has now done the research and used Google search data to put together a list of some of the nation's most googled decor and design trends, as well as highlighting the new decor and design trends for 2021 too.
Searching for a bit of inspiration? Read on to find out all about the trends and items that have been top of the nation's wishlist over the last 12 months.
Livin' La Vida Rustic
2020 was the year of the refresh, with many of us searching for ways to bring a more rustic feel into our homes. Searches for 'rustic desk' increased by 260% between March and October last year as more of us switched to working from home, while searches for 'rustic living room' also increased.

As for the UK's key source of inspiration? It seems many of us looked to our friends across the channel for home decor tips, with searches for 'French country decor' increasing by a massive 515%.
Proud Plant Parents
As our time outside grew limited during the national lockdowns of the last year, many of us here in the UK opted to bring a bit of greenery inside instead. Searches for 'indoor plant wall' grew by 425% and when one wall wasn't enough, some of us opted to go a step further, with an increase in searches for 'garden offices' and 'how to build a garden room' too.

Space-Saving Scandi Living
Scandi-style interior design has long been characterised by its clean, functional and minimalist style, and it's an approach that many of us wanted to adopt for ourselves. While searches for 'Scandi style living room' increased by 306% between March and October 2020, many of us were also looking for ways to save space in our homes, with searches for 'space saving wardrobe' and 'space saving dining table' also on the rise during the same period.

A Modern Country Future
Looking ahead to the trends of 2021, it looks like we can expect to see more greenery, more pared-back design ideas and more tactile and curved furniture in the months ahead, with the research pointing to Biophilia, Modern Country and Cocooning Furniture as the top three themes and trends.

Expect to see more nature-inspired designs as well as smart and elegant furniture inspired by British boutique hotels. We'll also be creating our own sanctuary spaces with soft, stylish sofas and sumptuous, 1920s-inspired occasional chairs with scalloped backs too.
